Tax: higher or lower?
A daily higher or lower game: compare tax rates, take-home pay and typical rent in five questions.
Today's set resets at midnight London time. Refreshing restarts it. Practice does not count towards today's score. No progress is saved.
About this higher or lower tax game
Each question uses only checked figures from this site's data. Values within 1% of each other are excluded. Tax questions compare the share taken from the next £1 of gross annual salary at £1 million. We compare take-home at £1,000,000 and £1,001,000 within the same tax band, divide the increase by £1,000 and subtract that share from 100%. This wider step prevents penny rounding from changing the displayed rate. This includes all levels of income tax and employee contributions covered by each country's calculation.
Take-home pay uses the site's tested employee calculations on equal gross annual pay in pounds. They assume a single full-year resident with no children or voluntary pension contributions. They exclude visas, private healthcare, moving costs and special expatriate regimes. Only countries with checked tax and exchange-rate inputs enter tax and pay questions. Local tax rules use the city named with each answer; country guides explain any charges left out.
Australia assumes appropriate private hospital cover, so no Medicare levy surcharge. Malta uses single-person rates for an employee born from 1962. Singapore covers a resident foreign Employment Pass holder below 55; the UAE covers a UK expatriate employee.
Rent questions name the city and the type of home in the source data. Monthly estimates are converted to pounds at the dated exchange rate. They are not quotes or national averages. Countries with unchecked rent or exchange-rate inputs are excluded from rent questions.
Figures are dated illustrations, not advice. Country guides retain the full model assumptions and limits. At most two of the five daily questions compare rent. The daily number starts at #1 on .
