What can I keep after becoming non-resident?
An Individual Savings Account, or ISA, can remain open after you become non-resident. The money and investments already inside keep their UK tax relief. You must tell the provider when you stop meeting the residence condition.
UK relief does not settle the tax position in your new country. Check its treatment of ISA income and gains separately before relying on a tax-free result abroad. GOV.UK’s ISA guide for people moving abroad, checked 25 October 2026, explains the UK position.
Can I add new money to my ISA?
Normally no, if you are non-resident for the tax year. HMRC calls payments into an ISA subscriptions. A move does not require you to sell investments already inside it, but keeping the account and making new subscriptions are separate questions.
For ISA eligibility, HMRC treats you as resident or non-resident for the whole tax year. A year with split-year treatment is still a UK-resident tax year for this purpose. Do not assume the date of your flight automatically ends eligibility.
Use the residence test guide and SA109 guide to establish the year’s position, then give the provider accurate details. HMRC’s ISA manager guidance, updated 22 November 2024, explains the whole-year rule.
Who has an exception to the subscription restriction?
Qualifying Crown employees serving overseas, such as eligible armed forces staff or diplomats paid from UK public funds, and their spouses or civil partners can qualify. Working abroad for an ordinary employer does not meet that exception.
There are also narrow rules for particular replacement or inherited subscriptions. These do not give a general right to add new savings. Ask the provider to check the relevant exception before paying.
Can I transfer an existing ISA?
Yes. GOV.UK allows a transfer to another ISA provider while non-resident. Check that the receiving provider accepts your residence and use its ISA transfer process.
If you return and become UK resident again, subscriptions can resume subject to the applicable allowance and account rules. Tell the provider your residence has changed again. HMRC’s public ISA guide sets out the transfer and return rules.
What should I check with my UK bank?
Ask whether your current account can stay open for someone resident in your destination and whether any services will change. Give the bank your new address and ask what evidence it needs. Keep its response with your move records.
The ISA tax rules do not settle what services a bank offers. Check each account separately before arranging salary, rent or pension payments through it.
Why is my bank asking for a residence declaration?
Banks collect tax residence information under international information-sharing rules. A self-certification is your declaration of where you are tax resident. You may need to provide the tax identification number issued by that country’s tax authority.
A change of address can mean the bank needs a fresh declaration or supporting evidence. HMRC’s International Exchange of Information Manual IEIM403180, updated 15 October 2026, explains why an earlier declaration may stop being reliable.
Holding a UK account does not itself decide residence. Answer using your tax position rather than your citizenship or the location of the bank. HMRC’s account-holder guide explains how information may be shared with other tax authorities.
Where do pensions fit into the move?
Read what happens to your pension when you move abroad for State Pension payments and private pension tax. Use the moving abroad checklist to keep account and departure checks together.
Budget 2026 retains the £20,000 annual cash ISA limit from April 2027. Non-resident subscription restrictions still need checking. See the Budget tracker for announcements and effective dates. Check the position again before making a new subscription.
What else do readers ask?
Do I have to close my ISA when I become non-resident?
No. An existing ISA can stay open with its UK tax relief. Tell the provider that your residence has changed.
Can Crown employees pay into an ISA while living abroad?
Qualifying Crown employees working overseas and their spouses or civil partners can meet the residence exception. Ordinary overseas employment does not give this exception.
Can I transfer my ISA after moving abroad?
Yes. GOV.UK permits a transfer to another ISA provider while non-resident. Ask the receiving provider whether it accepts customers resident in your country.
Does keeping a UK bank account make me UK tax resident?
No. Your residence follows the tax rules. The bank may separately ask you to declare your tax residence and supply a tax identification number.
