How can a British citizen live and work in Thailand?

The Non-Immigrant B visa is the main route for foreign employment, with a work permit needed in most cases before starting work, according to the Board of Investment’s 2026 guide.

The Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa has categories for Wealthy Global Citizens, Wealthy Pensioners, Work-from-Thailand Professionals and Highly-Skilled Professionals.

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) covers remote workers, freelancers and activity stays, with 5-year validity and stays of up to 180 days, extendable once, under Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance dated 17 May 2024.

The Non-Immigrant O-A visa is a retirement route for people aged 50 or over who do not intend to work, under the ministry’s undated guidance.

What are the Thai income tax bands?

The Thai Revenue Department’s personal income tax page has no date or tax year stated in the information available for this guide. Its published schedule is exempt up to THB 150,000; 5% above THB 150,000 to THB 300,000; 10% above THB 300,000 to THB 500,000; 15% above THB 500,000 to THB 750,000; 20% above THB 750,000 to THB 1,000,000; 25% above THB 1,000,000 to THB 2,000,000; 30% above THB 2,000,000 to THB 4,000,000; 35% above THB 4,000,000.

These are rates on slices of taxable income, not gross pay. This undated schedule is not presented as confirmed 2026 rules.

The Revenue Department’s 2024 foreign-income guidance says foreign income earned from 1 January 2024 by someone staying in Thailand for 180 days or more in that year is taxable when brought into Thailand, even in a later year.

The Board of Investment’s LTR programme page gives a 17% personal income tax rate for the Highly-Skilled Professional category. The page is undated; this is a category-specific rule.
