How much take-home pay does each country model show?

Figures are estimates for a single employee below State Pension age, with salary only and no dependants. The gross salaries are illustrative inputs, not local job offers. All results are annual GBP after modelled income tax and employee charges, before rent. The UK baseline covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Take-home estimates at £50,000 and £100,000 gross salary. Sources, tax periods and dates accompany each row. Sterling conversions use the dated ECB rates linked in each foreign row.

Swiss model assumptions for both salary examples

Swiss age band 35 to 44. BVG occupational pension assumes the employee pays 50% of the 10% statutory savings credit. Coordinated salary is gross capped at CHF 90,720 less CHF 26,460, with a CHF 3,780 minimum once gross exceeds CHF 22,680. Actual pension plans and employer shares differ. Non-occupational accident premiums assume 1.5%, the midpoint of Suva's typical 1% to 2% range, on salary capped at CHF 148,200. This is an assumption, not an insurer quote. Professional expenses use 3% of salary after AHV, ALV, BVG and accident premiums, minimum CHF 2,000 and maximum CHF 4,000, limited to earned income. Assumes qualifying insurance expenses after subsidies reach the single-person caps: federal CHF 1,800 and Zurich CHF 2,900 with BVG contributions, or CHF 2,700 and CHF 4,350 without pension contributions. These are tax deductions, not cash premiums deducted from take-home. Mandatory private health insurance is paid separately and is excluded from take-home. 2026 single full-year resident employee in Zurich city, below retirement age, no children or church tax. Federal tax plus Zurich basic tax multiplied separately by 95% for the canton and 119% for the city. Zurich income tax uses unrounded taxable income and each canton or city line is rounded to cents. Federal tax uses the published ESTV cumulative bases, rounds income down to CHF 100 and tax down to CHF 0.05. Assessment and payment rounding can differ. BVG risk and administration premiums, pension saving above statutory minimum credits and individual pension plan terms. Private mandatory health insurance cash premiums, premium subsidies and other living costs. Insurance tax deductions assume qualifying expenses reach the recorded caps. Travel and meal expense deductions, pillar 3a contributions, wealth tax, personal tax and church tax. Sources and check dates accompany the Swiss row.

Not modelled: residence eligibility, split years, double tax treaties, exit charges, other income, employer charges, student loans, benefits in kind, voluntary pension saving, dependants' allowances, special expatriate regimes, rent or other living costs. Regional coverage and further country exclusions appear below and on each linked country page. Annual liability can differ from deductions on a particular payslip.

How should I read the take-home table?

Each foreign row converts the same sterling gross salary into local currency, applies ordinary employee tax rules and converts the result back to pounds. The table shows annual pay after modelled Income Tax and employee charges, before rent.

The baseline covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland has different Income Tax bands. All rows assume a single employee with salary only. The table’s linked sources identify tax periods and the ECB conversion date.

Which country is best to live in after costs?

Take-home pay is only the start of a spending budget. A higher cash salary can face higher rent or leave more retirement saving to the employee. Compare an actual job offer with housing near that job.

The stay-or-go calculator subtracts the site’s dated city rent estimates. Its remainder still needs to cover other living costs. The country guides show the city and the costs left out of each model. A sterling conversion does not measure local buying power.

Which regional tax rules does the table use?

The table includes only models whose inputs pass the salary coverage checks. Australia assumes appropriate private hospital cover and the full Medicare levy. Malta uses single-person rates and the employee contribution cap for people born from 1962.

Singapore covers a resident foreign Employment Pass holder below 55 with SGD 1,000 Earned Income Relief. CPF Board guidance exempts foreigners who are not permanent residents from contributions. The UAE row covers a UK expatriate employee, with unemployment insurance premiums and health cover excluded.

The comparison tool shows which destinations support the entered salary. Switzerland uses stated pension, accident and insurance assumptions, with age 35 to 44 as the default. Private health premiums are paid separately. Regional tax rules and deductions can materially affect those results.

Can a low-tax country be hard to move to?

Yes. Permission to visit does not permit every form of work or a permanent stay. A work pass may depend on an employer and the proposed role. The easiest country guide starts with the rights available to British citizens, including Ireland’s Common Travel Area access.

Check the route before treating a salary row as an available option. The moving abroad guide puts UK reporting and residence checks in order.

What does this comparison leave out?

The table excludes special expatriate regimes, investment income and employer charges. It also excludes split-year residence and treaty calculations. Those cases need a different assessment from an ordinary employee model.

What else do readers ask?

What is the best country to move to from the UK for take-home pay?

The UAE has the highest take-home pay at both illustrative salaries among the twelve checked employee models. Rent, work rights and other costs still affect the decision.

What is the best country to live in?

There is no single answer for every reader. Compare an available job, permission to live there and the costs you would actually pay.

Does the table compare local job offers?

No. It converts the same £50,000 and £100,000 gross salaries into local currency to compare modelled deductions.

Are the tax figures fully checked?

The salary rows use checked inputs within stated limits. Destinations with unresolved checks have no salary row. These estimates still exclude household circumstances and other income.
