Tax in Canada vs UK: how does Ontario pay compare?

Canada combines federal tax with provincial tax. This example uses Ontario for a full-year resident, so results elsewhere in Canada will differ.

The calculation includes Canada Pension Plan contributions, Employment Insurance and Ontario’s health premium. It applies standard personal and employment credits, and the Ontario surtax where relevant.

This is an ordinary resident employee calculation with no registered retirement savings plan contribution or dependant claims. The annual method can differ slightly from payroll withholding.

The UK comparison uses annual National Insurance for a full-year resident of England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The assumed single employee has no children, other income, pension contributions or student loans.

Neither the Ontario nor the UK figure includes rent, other living costs, visas, moving costs, wealth taxes or treaties. Net salary alone is only one part of a relocation decision.

At £100,000 gross: Canada take-home is £1,959.19 lower than the UK before rent. UK take-home is £68,557.40 and Canada take-home is £66,598.21. Canada uses the 2026 tax year; the UK uses 2026-27. Review the Canada and UK sources.

UK baseline for Canada

  1. For the British baseline, subtract the £12,570.00 allowance to find £87,430.00 in taxable pay.

How is employee pay taxed?

The Toronto model deducts federal and Ontario income tax, CPP, CPP2 and Employment Insurance. It includes standard personal and employment credits, Ontario surtax, the tax reduction and health premium.

Tax period: 2026. Main city used: Toronto.

Why does the Canadian province matter?

The model pairs Ontario tax with Toronto rent. Canada's federal schedule is only part of the bill. The 2026 CRA payroll formulas give a first federal band of 14% up to CAD 58,523 and a first Ontario band of 5.05% up to CAD 53,891.

The calculation includes Ontario surtax, its health premium and the basic Ontario tax reduction. Another province requires a different schedule.

How do Canadian tax credits and contributions work?

A tax credit reduces the tax bill. It differs from a deduction that reduces taxable income. The engine includes personal credits and a federal Canada employment amount capped at CAD 1,501.

It also models Canada Pension Plan, or CPP, and Employment Insurance, or EI. CPP2 applies at 4% between CAD 74,600 and CAD 85,000. The model deducts enhanced CPP and CPP2 before calculating net income and applies the Ontario credits.

At higher incomes the federal basic personal amount falls from CAD 16,452 to CAD 14,829 between CAD 181,440 and CAD 258,482 of net income. The CRA payroll formulas supply those inputs.

What does the Toronto housing estimate cover?

It is a city-centre one-bedroom rent estimate from Numbeo. Deposits, utilities and a larger property's costs sit outside it. Compare an actual Canadian salary and employer benefits with the location of the job.

Will my UK State Pension increase in Canada?

Canada has a social security agreement with the UK that does not provide annual State Pension increases. DWP's country list gives that exception. The UK pensions abroad guide explains why payment entitlement and annual increases are separate questions.

What permission do I need to live and work here?

UK citizens need a visa to live in Canada (work, business, study, retirement). Stays over 6 months need a visitor record. Permanent residency eligibility includes 730 days in the last 5 years. Dual citizenship allowed.

How much rent does the comparison assume?

Rent estimate in Toronto: CA$2,265.38/month for a city-centre one-bedroom home; Numbeo: Toronto city-centre one-bedroom rent, checked 25 October 2026; method and exclusions.

Getting residence

Check work and study permits with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). A visitor record extends a visit; it does not establish a right to work. Choose the immigration route before planning a permanent move.
