How does take-home pay compare with the UK?
Annual GBP at the same gross salary, using the UK and destination engines. Single employee, no children or voluntary pension contributions. A converted salary is not a local job offer.

How is employee pay taxed?
The Zurich salary model includes federal, cantonal and city income taxes, employee social contributions and stated pension, accident and deduction assumptions. The default age band is 35 to 44; private health insurance is paid separately.
Tax period: 2026. Main city used: Zurich.
Why does the Swiss canton matter for tax?
Switzerland combines federal, cantonal and local taxes. A canton is a constituent Swiss state. The employee model uses Zurich and pairs it with Zurich rent.
The calculation includes AHV, ALV, assumed BVG pension saving and an assumed accident premium, plus professional expense and insurance deductions. The notes below explain each assumption. Church tax, wealth tax and private health insurance cash premiums are excluded. A different canton or employment package requires a different comparison.
Who qualifies for Swiss lump-sum taxation?
The Federal Department of Finance describes expenditure-based treatment for eligible foreign nationals arriving for the first time or after at least ten years abroad, without gainful employment in Switzerland.
This method has statutory assessment conditions. A minimum assessment is the amount on which tax is calculated, rather than a fixed fee. Someone taking ordinary Swiss employment cannot assume the method applies.
Will my UK State Pension increase in Switzerland?
Switzerland is covered by DWP's annual-increase list. Tax on the pension still needs a separate check. The UK pensions abroad guide explains the British payment and transfer rules.
Does Switzerland have a wealth tax?
Yes. Cantons and communes levy ordinary personal wealth tax within the federal Tax Harmonisation Act framework. A commune is a local authority. There is no single national wealth-tax rate that describes every Swiss address.
The assessment needs the location and the taxable value of assets after allowable debts. It can create a charge on holdings without a sale. The salary table above does not calculate this liability.
How are assets and debts assessed?
Quoted investments, property and private-company interests need the valuation required by the relevant rules. An owner's shareholding and the company's underlying assets must not be counted twice as separate personal wealth.
Overseas property and debts can raise allocation questions under local rules and treaties. A foreign asset may need disclosure even where another country has the direct taxing right. A mortgage cannot simply be assigned to whichever asset would give the largest deduction.
Does the salary model include Swiss wealth tax?
No. It takes a salary input without collecting or valuing personal assets. A person with substantial investments needs a separate wealth assessment alongside the employee result.
The UK wealth tax article covers British proposals. The UK exit tax guide explains why overseas-asset Inheritance Tax exposure can continue under its own residence-history rules.
What permission do I need to live and work here?
UK citizens need a Swiss visa or permit (L, B, C) to live and work. Register with the municipality after arrival. C permit after at least 10 years. Dual citizenship allowed.
Can a British citizen move to Switzerland for work?
A new applicant needs an admission route that fits the role. GOV.UK Living in Switzerland and the State Secretariat for Migration explain the framework. A job offer can be conditional on permission.
How much rent does the comparison assume?
Rent estimate in Zurich: CHF 2,431.00/month for a city-centre one-bedroom home; Numbeo: Zurich city-centre one-bedroom rent, checked 25 October 2026; method and exclusions.
Getting residence
New British applicants follow the rules for non-EU nationals. Work permits are limited and generally cover qualified managers, specialists and experienced graduates. An employer applies through the cantonal authorities; a job offer alone does not secure a permit.
